24 Weeks Pregnant – Changes for my baby

Although brain waves were detectable at 40 days, my baby’s brain is developing quickly during this time frame. By baby’s taste buds and lungs are both becoming more developed.  It is during this time that surfactant is made which helps the air sacs inflate easier.   This is an on going process which works through almost the end of pregnancy which is why prematurity can cause problems.  The lungs need all this time to develop completely.*

24 Weeks Pregnant – Changes for me

One of the things you are probably noticing most is the stretching skin around your breast and abdomen.  This stretching can also bring about itchiness requiring lotion in order to experience any relief.    Similarly, your eyes could be more sensitive and dry which may need eye drops to help them feel better.*

24 Weeks Pregnant – Planning this week

Glucose screening tests could be performed anytime now and over the next few weeks.  These tests are monitoring for gestational diabetes which is more common for moms who are heavier.  The good news is that gestational diabetes is typically a temporary form of diabetes.  The symptoms that you may be experiencing gestational diabetes are:

  • Sugar in urine (revealed in a test done in your doctor’s office)
  • Unusual thirst
  • Frequent urination
  • Fatigue
  • Nausea

Gestational diabetes is not expected and is only experienced in 2-5 % of all pregnancies. The screening for this disease usually will take place between your 24th and 28th week of pregnancy. If the results are high, your healthcare provider will prescribed additional testing to determine if gestational diabetes is the appropriate diagnosis.

24 Weeks Pregnant – Health Tips

Smaller meals spread throughout the day is one of the best ways to deal with heartburn.  You might also try avoiding meals late at night if heartburn continues.  Although heartburn can be uncomfortable, be sure that you continue to eat well balanced meals so that both you and your baby are getting the nutrients that you need.

M24 Weeks Pregnant – Tips for my partner

Once the baby arrives it is going to be harder to have “us” time.  When the third trimester arrives it is going to be uncomfortable to travel or do much of anything.  Take this time to do a romantic getaway even if it is for a night or two.  You both will be glad you did.

* All measurements are provided as a general guide for common pregnancy development which may vary depending on the nutrition, mother’s health or accurate dating of conception.  Every pregnancy is unique and may be experienced differently even for the same woman.  It is important to undertand that babies develop at a different rate even before they are born. The purpose of this developmental information is to give you a general idea of how your baby is growing, and you must remember that your baby’s growth may vary from that which is outlined.
